DROPPED BY AMERICAN DESTROYER

ON ACCOUNT OF DANGER FROM SUBMARINE.

DURING RESCUE OF CASTAWAYS

LONDON, July 29. It is officially stated that an

American destroyer dropped depth charges for its own safety, because of possible danger from a submarine. This statement was made by Colonel Knox, United States Secre-

of the Navy. He said an. American destroyer heard a S.O.S. from a ship and went to pick up the 60 survivors. While the destroyer was engaged in this work, ‘the presence of a submerged submarine was reported. The destroyer turned in the direction, indicated and dropped three depth charges for the sake of its own preservation. Had there been a submarine there the destroyer might have been sunk, but it was not known whether there was a submarine there or not.
