JAPANESE TACTICS
CAMPAIGN AGAINST THAILAND
SCARE STORIES OF BRITISH MOVEMENTS.
MAY BE PRELUDE TO NEW AGGRESSION.
LONDON, July 29.
The Japanese radio has opened a campaign against Thailand, very similar to that which preceded the Japanese move, against Indo-China. It is stating that British troops are moving towards the Thailand frontier, that warships are patrolling off the coast, and that residents have already begun to leave Singapore. It takes this as proof that strong pressure is being exerted on Thailand.
It is reported that the Japanese forces in South Indo-China will number 40,000.
A message from Vichy states that the terms of the military and strategic agreement with Japan are being kept secret.

ARRESTS IN FRANCE
OF OFFICERS & CITIZENS.
OPPOSED TO INDO-CHINA SURRENDER.
LONDON, July 29.
The Madrid correspondent of the “Daily Mail” says more French officers and leading citizens who are believed to have opposed the Indo-China surrender have been arrested under orders from the Vichy Government. Discontent is specially' great in the army. Several generals called on Marshal Petain on July 27, protesting against the detention of brother officers. They complained of the disappearance of Generals Grussard, Duran and Madrid. A naval court tried a batch of French Communists at Toulon for spreading defeatism, among the French army and people. Twelve, including one woman, were sentenced to terms of imprisonment ranging from five to 20 years. TRADE STOPPAGE ANGLO-AMERICAN ACTION. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.20 a.m.) RUGBY, July 29. It is emphasised in London this morning that the measures taken against Japan by the United States, Britain and the Dominions constitute machinery which brings Japan’s trade with those countries to a standstill. The machinery is so devised that through a system of licences, which may be granted in respect of individual transactions, there may be a. relaxation of these measures, but the extent to which this will be permitted may well be dependent on Japanese action. OCCUPATION TROOPS ARRIVAL OF TRANSPORTS & DESTROYERS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) SAIGON, July 29. Japanese troopships and destroyers are expected off Cape Saint Jaques this afternoon, proceeding up the river on Wednesday. Embarkation arrangements have been completed, including the clearing of docks and warehouses. A message from Hanoi says it is officially announced that total numbers of Japanese troops stationed in Southern Indo-China will be 40,000.
