, At Least Nine Brought Down BATTLES ON CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN FRONTS

FIERCE RUSSIAN COUNTER-THRUSTS

LONDON, July 29. The .Russians defending- the approaches to Moscow and Kiev are making fierce counter-attacks against German armoured divisions-and infantry. A Russian communique states that the second German offensive on the Eastern Front is collapsing. The Russians are using 100-ton tanks, which the Berlin correspondent of a Swedish newspaper describes as forts, equipped with multiple machine-guns and heavy guns. Rumanian troops are reported to have occupied Ovidiopool at the mouth of the River Dniester and Finnish troops are said to have made further progress in the northern sector. It is said the Finns have been promised more territory as a reward for joining with Germany in war against Russia. Fierce fighting continues round Smolensk. A German communique speaks of a battle of annihilation. The Russians say their troops have inflicted heavy losses on the enemy in this region. The Germans attempted to raid Moscow and Odessa. Only a few planes got through to Moscow and at least nine were brought down.
