GRAIN AND PRODUCE
CANTERBURY MARKETS. CHAFF PRICES LOWER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 27. A reaction to the heavy shipments of potatoes to Auckland last week has been manifested in Canterbury this week by the complete absence of any interest in the market. Values have not moved down simply because there has been no business to warrant a price being paid. The trade here is unlikely to do any buying unless there are orders in hand. The situation will be further affected next week when another ship is due to sail for Auckland. No indication is given of the quantity likely to be lifted but it is believed that it will again be fairly substantial. Possibly because it has been so lifeless the market has not reacted to the flutter in the House of Representatives on imports'from Australia. The usual midwinter demand for chaff has not set in and the market, strangely enough for July, has weakened to about £3 10s on trucks. All other markets are quiet.
