INDOOR BASKETBALL

TOURNEY ON SATURDAY

NIGHT

VISITORS FROM WELLINGTON AREA AND MANAWATU.

CONTESTS IN MUNICIPAL HALL

One of the most interesting indoor basketball contests ever held in Masterton took place at the Municipal Hall on Saturday evening. The contest was primarily arranged by the Wairarapa Interhouse Association by inviting Y.M.C.A. men’s and ladies’ teams from Palmerston North. Hutt Valley and Wellington to compete with two representative teams of the local Interhouse Association. There is no doubt the visit of outside teams gives great impetus to this game that does so much towards keeping fit the young men and women participating, and the local Interhouse Association is to be commended for the time, attention and expense incurred in its efforts to maintain the physical condition of Masterton’s vigorous youth by its various activities during the year. There was a good attendance of the public, which thoroughly enjoyed the 44- hours entertainment of thrills, ample evidence of which could be readily seen and heard, the enthusiasm at times being most intense as player after player kept the ball constantly on the move up and down the court. The game gives wonderful scope for individual and collective play while some of the passing -bouts were very effective and showed a great deal of useful team work played in a remarkably friendly and true sporting spirit. Masterton ladies were indeed a great combination and proved their superiority in successfully netting their three games while Palmerston North men did equally well, showing wonderful team work to secure victory in their three games. The southern teams arrived on the 11.30 a.m. train, and were met by Messrs E. M. Hodder, president, and C. W. Gaze, general secretary of the Y.M.C.A.. also Messrs D. Costello and D. Minifie of the Interhouse Association. They were conveyed by Wairarapa Transport Ltd. vehicles and cars to the Y.M.C.A. rooms, which were used as the local rendezvous. Afterwards they were entertained at lunch at the Cosy, where a formal welcome was extended by Messrs Gaze and Costello..

About 40 who made the trip from Palmerston North by motor bus and private cars, arrived at 3.30 p.m. and were entertained at afternoon tea at the State Kitchenette. Trials were allotted each team to allow the players to familiarise themselves with the playing area and prior to the commencement of the contest the Deputy-Mayor, Councillor W. White (in the unavoidable absence of the Mayor) extended a hearty welcome to those visiting the town for the occasion.

After the termination of the games an adjournment was made to the Y.M.GA. rooms, where under the supervision of the Ladies’ Auxiliary, supper was served. Mr George Daubney voiced appreciation of the co-operation received from the Y.M.C.A.. and eulogised the untiring efforts of Mr D. Costello to bring about so successful a fixture, also expressing the hope that further gatherings of a like nature would eventuate. „ d „ Messrs H. Piper and L. Cato, foi Wellington teams and Mr Harvey, on behalf of Palmerston North, replied, all inviting Masterton teams to visit their respective districts, and expressing appreciation of the opportunity foi the games and the hospitality accorded. . ~ The Palmerston North visitors returned after the social, the Wellington and Hutt players being billeted during the weekend among friends. Owing to the inclement weather yesterday afternoon was spent at the Y.M.C.A., the time being occupied in music and song, also in community singing around the piano and a cheery fire, the pianists being Messrs J. Baines and D. Minifie. The referees for the tournament were Messrs H. Piper, D. Minifie, Foster, Harvey, Cronin and D. Costello, and Mrs H. Piper. • - Results are: — LADIES’ SECTION.
