MUSIC IN THE BLITZ

EXPERIENCES ON A TOUR. Relating his experiences of touring the provinces in England with the Philharmonic Orchestra, frequently appearing at the same time as the German bombers, Dr Malcolm Sargent said: —“It has been thrilling and exciting. In one town I did a programme following a dreadful blitz. Just as we were going to do the second number the sirens went. I turned to the audience and said, ‘The Germans may kill you and me at any moment, but here is something they can never kill. It is Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony.’ Not a soul left the place, and the orchestra played like angels. I have never seen the English so music-hun-gry.” Asked for some explanation, Dr Sargent thought carefully. “Perhaps,” he said, “it is against the English character for a man to weep over his own personal sorrow, but he will weep for the general sorrow. Music expresses that. It is the emotion of humanity finding expression.”
