AMERICAN HELP

MR HARRY HOPKINS GIVES SOME DETAILS

THOUSANDS OF AIRCRAFT ALREADY SENT. VAST SHIPBUILDING PROGRAMME LONDON. July 27. Striking facts and figures as to the extent of American help to Britain were given today by Mr Harry Hopkins. President Roosevelt's personal envoy, and supervisor of the Lease or Lend programme. Mr Hopkins declared that during the past few months aeroplanes in thousands, made in American factories, had either been flown or shipping across the Atlantic to Britain. They ranged from the largest bombers to the fastest fighters and were in combat now. He had seen in the past week four-engine Boeings return from Berlin. A vast programme for building these planes in thousands is far_ advanced. Hitler would never be able to move his fac : tories far enough to the east to escape their devastating power of destruction. America, he said, had already sent several hundreds of tanks to Britain and many more were on their way. Geean-going ships, many of them oiltankers, had been transferred to Britain. The biggest merchant ship building programme ever undertaken was in progress. He could promise ships to carry food, oil and munitions to Britain. So far, America had made but a limited part of her great war effort. The urgency of the need for help was realised and Americans were joining hands with the men-working with Lord Beaverbrook and Mr Bevin. America would increase her food production' within the next twelve months in order to send food to Britain.
