WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNCIL MEETING AT CARTERTON TODAY. WATER RACE MATTERS. (“Times-Age”. Special.) The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council was held at Carterton this morning and was presided over by Cr. F. Court. There were also present Crs. D. McGregor, A. McGregor,- C. A. Cameron, Jas. Strang. L. S. Gallon, R. Rayner, E. W. Allen and A. E. Reid. The chairman reported that since the- last meeting a former member of the working staff, Pte. Keith Townsend, had been killed in action in Crete. He stated that the late Private Townsend had proved himself an excellent workman while in the employ of the county. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of deceased. The clerk was authorised to write to the wife and parents of deceased, expressing sympathy with them in their bereavement. The treasurer reported a credit balance at the Bank cf New Zealand of £5212 12s 9d. Accounts amounting to £1968 4s Id were passed for payment. The reports of the Carrington and Taratahi water race committees were read and adopted. The question of supplying water to Mr G. Wadham’s back paddocks had been gone into by the councillors of the riding. It was decided that the only way water could be brought into the paddocks was by using pipes. This would be done by the water race staff when the pipes had been procured by Mr Wadham. Cr. Rayner referred to the condition of the water races on Mr W. Rayner’s property and it was resolved that the overseer inspect them. The Masterton County Council wrote

drawing attention to an extensive log blockage in the Taueru River. If it were not attended to it might endanger the Taueru bridge. Councillors were of opinion that no danger would arise and that later the timber could be burnt on the river bed.
