BELIEVED PRISONERS

WELL-KNOWN BROTHERS ONE RESIDENT OF MASTERTON. ECHO OF GREEK AND CRETE CAMPAIGNS. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS. July 22. How contact was lost with Captain H. S. (“Bricky”) Budd, of Masterton, and his brother, Lieutenant F. S. M. (“Buzz”) Budd, who are reported missing following the campaigns in Greece and Crete, is outlined in a letter received by their parents, Mr and Mrs F. S. Budd, Hastings. “The unit to which ‘Buzz' was attached had a job to do, to hold a position near the Corinth Canal while another unit passed through to southern Greece for embarkation,” writes their correspondent from Egypt. “Unfortunately, as the unit reached the canal, parachute troops descended on them, and the company had to put up a fight for it. We have learned that they did a splendid piece of work, and it was through their efforts that many lives were saved. Unfortunately, they must have suffered losses, and we have heard that ‘Buzz,’ in company with two other officers, were last seen taking to the hills with a remnant of the company, and they must eventually have been taken prisoners of war. “Lately ‘Brick’ was a company commander, and did a splendid job during an action in Crete. He was with us till the last day, and was given a job to go down to the beach of embarkation to try to arrange for some rations for the battalion. Fie did not return, and when we inquired for him at night he could not be found anywhere. He murt have been all right, because we had no action in that part that day or night. We quite expected him to turn up with the following party, but he did not, and all that we can believe is that he is a prisoner cf war.” Mrs H. S. Budd resides in Herbert Street, Masterton.
