COMPOST MAKING
SOMETHING OF AN ART. Following the usual advice given on compost making, many home gardeners have put their weeds in the compost heap only to find that many of the weed seeds live to germinate when the compost is dug into cultivated ground. The fact is that compost making is something of an art, and composting with weeds needs a little more than usual care and attention. All kinds of weeds may be added to the compost heap if certain precautions are taken, for properly fermented, these make healthy humus. First, care must be taken to see that these materials get into the inner part of the compost at the beginning. Here the conditions of heat and fermentation are most conducive to the destruction of all seeds and spores. Many people forget that the maintenance of proper moisture content is most important in the compost heap. When weeds and such-like material are added to the compost heap, it is always wise, unless they are added in rainy weather, to water the heap at the same time, thoroughly wetting, but not soaking, the layer of vegetable matter.
