“WE CANNOT WIN”
AN ADMISSION BY NAZIS. Three members of Hitler's Cabinet admit, that Germany cannot win the war, declares John T. Whitaker, “New York Post" correspondent, in a cable from Lisbon, according to the New York correspondent of the Sydney “Sun.”
Whitaker admits that reports of this nature should usually be discounted. “But," he adds, “I can personally vouch for the authenticity of this report.” Realisation that the war will continue for a long time and that Germany cannot force the issue has swept the highest Nazi quarters, he declares. Hitler’s military leaders are resolved to fight vigorously, even if the war is carried to five continents.
Eut the men charged with financial, industrial and economic problems are becoming increasingly defeatist. They do not now expect Germany to be able to knock out Britain before American arms production flows across the Atlantic and to all parts of the Empire in a formidable torrent. Meanwhile, says Whitaker, Germany’s own industrial position is worsening, though it must be realised that the Nazis still enjoy the momentum gained by their seven years’ start in military preparation. Germany, however, is experiencing difficulties in replacing worn machine tools, in spite of the fact that she is seizing those obtainable in the conquered countries, and even in Italy.
One of Hitler’s closest collaborators in economic matters is reported by Whitaker to have declared: “We are likely to have brilliant military successes, but the real war will soon start going against us.” Another, whom Whitaker does not name, but is apparently Dr. Schacht, former president of the Reichsbank. stated: “Germany has lost the war. Again wo miscalculated about America. I bear a terrible responsibility, as I advised Hitler that the Americans would never supply Britain with arms, except on a cash basis.”
