Three of the numerous poachers of native pigeons on the West Coast of the South Island were convicted and fined at Greymouth recently. In one case counsel for two men who had shot fourteen of the beautiful birds, pleaded that the law-breaking of the culprits was due to over-zealousness on their part for patriotic purposes. They were supporting one particular party and thought their dinner, to be raffled, would be made better by having pigeons included. Each offender was fined £5 with costs, and their guns were confiscated. This case is a reminder of a story told about a man during the last war. He drank so many bottles of wine, won in patriotic raffles, that he got patriotic gout. The excuse of another poacher was' that he had shot native pigeons “to make broth for an invalid.” He was fined £5 with costs.
