PERSISTENT AIR ATTACKS
ON ENEMY-OCCUPIED TERRITORY In Spite of Adverse Weather ONSLAUGHT ON SHIPS NEAR FRENCH COAST FEW ENEMY FIGHTERS ENCOUNTERED LONDON, July 20. Considerable aerial activity over the Channel and sweeps over Northern France are reported in an Air Ministry communique, which states that the weather did not favour large scale operations. Fighters attacked an enemy tanker near the French coast with gunfire and set the ship on 'fire. An escorting anti-aircraft ship was also attacked. One enemy aircraft was shot down. Bombers later attacked the same tanker and scored hits. Two bombers are missing. The pilot of a fighter formation which made a sweep over Northern France said he saw only a few Messerschmitts. Only one showed fight and it was shot down. There were no raids in this country during the day.
