These ladies, he said, were the backbone of the church work and on behalf of the church officers he thanked them. The president, Mrs A. Johnson, thanked the members for their support, and urged them to continue their interest in church work in spite of the many other calls on their time. Appreciation of the work of the secretary and treasurer, Mrs Bower, was expressed by those present. Mrs McLeod presented Mesdames Bower and Johnson with shoulder sprays. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mrs A. Johnson (re-elected); deputy president, the 'Rev H. Bloomfield; vice-presidents, Mesdames Bloomfield, Gregor, Orr, Wallis; secretary and treasurer, Mrs F. Bower (re-elected). The ladies’ committee served afternoon tea. Home Guard. “Will the Matawhera Cutting be held by the defending force on Sunday afternoon?” is the subject of discussion amongst Home Guardsmen at the moment. The defenders are confident they can hold the position and as one company is drawn from the residents of the locality their local knowledge will be an advantage. Against them they have units who have been well trained in attack and in the use of cover. The headquarters staff of the battalion has issued maps of the locality and these have been most useful to the companies residing outside the manoeuvre area. The compiling of the maps has been the work of Mr J. F. Thompson, the battalion intelligence officer, and he has had. the co-operation of the residents of the district, who have been most helpful in placing any maps in their possession at the disposal of Mr. Thompson. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs W. Hodge and family have returned home after a holiday spent in Nelson. Mrs G. R. Jury has returned to Papawai after a short visit to Wellington. Bridge Party. There was a large attendance at the bridge party held in the Plunket Rooms on Thursday evening. This function was arranged by the Lady Galway Guild. The prize winners were Mrs J. Parker and Mr F. Dewhurst. Red Cross Society’s Dance. The Greytown Red Cross Society’s dance in the Odd Fellows Hall tonight has been arranged to raise funds for equipment for the depot and V.A.D. section.
