WAR PAINTINGS
PICTURES OF THE BATTLE FOR CRETE WORK OF CAPTAIN P. McINTYRE. VIVID AND INVALUABLE RECORD. (N.Z.E.F. Official News Service.) (Received This Day, 10.25 a.m.) CAIRO, July 18. In the work of the only official artist witness of the Battle for Crete, New Zealand possesses the most remarkable series of war paintings yet made in the Middle Eas't. More vivid than any photographs or written descriptions, these pictures, by Captain Peter Mclntyre, the official artist with the N.Z.E.F., recapture spectacular features of the strangest .war ever fought. Living as a soldier in Crete, Captain Mclntyre saw the battle and evacuation through a soldier’s eyes. He sketched parachute landings as they occurred and tramped many miles to watch other unforgettable aspects of the invasion and the magnificent resistance offered by his own comrades. The pictures are included in his first public exhibition, which was opened in Cairo today by Lady Wavell. It is expected that the collection will be shipped to New Zealand as soon as possible after the show closes. Highly praising Captain Mclntyre’s work, Lady Wavell said his gifts as an artist, plus his experience as a soldier, eminently fitted him for his position. She added that the pictures would form an invaluable record.
