DESTRUCTION OF ENEMY SHIPS IN MEDITERRANEAN Eight Accounted For By British Submarines VIGOROUS AIR RAIDS IN LIBYA & ELSEWHERE LARGE SUPPLY VESSEL TORPEDOED AT TRIPOLI LONDON, July 18. Eight enemy vessels carrying troops and supplies have been successfully attacked by British submarines in the Mediterranean, according to an Admiralty communique issued this afternoon. A supply ship escorted by Italian destroyers and aircraft was hit and probably sunk. A second convoy of one schooner and three large caiques, carrying German troops, petrol and ammunition, was intercepted and the whole convoy was sent to the bottom of the sea. Another convoy of a schooner and two large caiques was also sunk. The vessels were carrying German troops and military supplies. Both schooners and the five caiques were flying the German flag. British naval forces in the Mediterranean have been strengthened by a number of “pocket destroyers,” which have arrived there after an arduous voyage from England. The vessels are equipped to meet attack from the air or by E-boats, and are fitted to’ deal vzith submarines. Further successful raids on the harbours at Benghazi, Tripoli and other enemy positions in the Mediterranean are reported. A 6,000-ton ship was torpedoed amidships in Tripoli Harbour.
