HUNGER STRIKERS

AGAINST DETENTION IN AUSTRALIA. PROTESTS BY MINERS’ UNIONS. (By .Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, July 18. Officials of the Coal Miners’ Federation will meet on Sunday to formulate a declaration of policy with regard to the hunger strikers. Pit-top meetings of protest- against the detention of Thomas and Ratliff were held today at some collieries and more will be held tomorrow.

An earlier message stated that Max Thomas and Horace Ratliff had been hunger-striking for 14 days in protest against what they claimed was illegal detention under the National Security Regulations. Their case, it was stated, was creating considerable comment in Labour circles and had reached a stage where the Government had been forced to take cognisance of it.
