THE FATE OF SMOLENSK
Loss of Town Not Admitted by Soviet FURTHER SWEEPING GERMAN CLAIMS RUSSIANS REPORT NO SUBSTANTIAL CHANGE ' • LONDON, eJuly 18. It was claimed this evening by the German wireless that Smolensk, on the road to Moscow, was captured on Wednesday. A Russian communique repeated the statement of yesterday that fighting was going on in the Smolensk area. The Germans assert that their break through the strongly-fortified Stalin Line has been widened beyond Smolensk and that all attempts by the Russians to recapture the town have failed. A Russian communique reports no substantial change on any of the various fronts. Other claims not confirmed are that .the Germans have occupied four strategic towns south of the Dniester River and. a communique from Helsinki states that the Finns have advanced 90 miles in six days.
