The oldest banknotes in the world were issued in China 2897 years B.C. In many respects they were similar to those of the present day, bearing the name of the note, the signature of the official who issued it, and its value in both figures and words. On the top was the following philosophic injunction: “Produce all you can; spend with economy.” The note was printed in blue ink on papei’ made from the fibre of the, mulberry tree.
