George* and Graham, who have recently returned from overseas. Nine veterans of the Great War were also visited, and cigarettes- and extra comforts were handed to them. School Teacher Dismissed. The stand that if a man were not prepared to fight to defend the Empire he was not a fit person to teach British children, was taken by the Hawke’s Bay Education Board at a meeting yesterday, when it dismissed Bernard Tunnicliffe, first assistant at Kaiti, Gisborne, and accepted the resignation of the Ti Tree Point, Weber, teacher, N. J. F. Senk. Both had appealed against miliary service on conscientious grounds. Member’s Request for Leave. Dr. McMillan, approached regarding the question concerning leave of absence for him raised in the House of Representatives, said that there was obviously some misunderstanding, for reference to his request to the Government Whip would disclose that he simply asked for two weeks’ leave, not leave on the ground of urgent public business. In good conditions, shooting in the New Zealand Gun Club’s championships continued at Longlands (Hawke’s Bay) yesterday. The twelve-bird handicap resulted: —E. Monteith, W. Quigley, 1 equal (12 birds); R. S. Taylor, J. W. McKenzie, B. Clinch, H. Morris, C. Gunn, D. M. Campbell, 3 equal. In the 15-bird clay championship, the following tied with 15 birds each:—R. W. Prosser, D. M. Campbell, H. Quartermain, F. W. Elliott, E. E. Grey, H. Clinch, J. W. McKenzie, A. J. Brown, D. S. McKenzie and D. B. Thomason. Petrol for Wardens. To facilitate training, fire-fighting wardens, under the E.P.S. scheme, are now being given a licence to obtain 50 gallons of petrol to extend over the next three months. Up to the present these wardens have had to turn out in their own cars, using their own petrol. The new conditions are not regarded as a great improvement, as the 50 gallons are to be divided among the 10 cars in each district unit, and the men still have to pay for it out of their own pockets. It is understood that where there are instances of hardship, and fire wardens cannot really afford this charge, representations to that effect may be made to secure some relief. Some of the district wardens, who have special duties to perform in areas visible from the open sea, are also being given a licence to secure an allowance of petrol.
