PACT WITH SOVIET

LEAGUE AGAINST NAZI CRIMINAL EMPIRE NOT EMBRACING . COMMUNISM, MR CHURCHILL QUOTES MARSHAL SMUTS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.45 a.m.) RUGBY, July 15. In a statement in the House of Commons Mr Churchill spoke of the AngloSoviet declaration, which he said carried with it the full assent of the British and Russian peoples and that of the British Dominions, for united action against the common foe and could not fail to exercise a highly beneficial influence on the future of the war. “It is of course an alliance and the Russian people are now our allies." he added (amidst cheers), reading an extract from a recent speech by Field Marshal Smuts, in which lie said: “Let no one say we are now in league with Communists and fighting the battle of Communism. More fitly can neutralists and fence-sitters be charged with fighting the battle of Nazism. If Hitler, in his insane meglomania, has driven Russia to fight him in self-defence, we bless her arms and wish her all success, without for a moment identifying ourselves with her Communistic creed. Hitler made her his enemy—not us friendly to her creed—just as previously he treacherously made her his friend, without embracing Communism'.” Mr Churchill said these words expressed the views of the British Government. The Foreign Secretary, he continued, had been instrumental in bringing about a great measure of agreement between the Soviet Union and the Polish Republic and, although negotiations had not yet been concluded, he was hopeful that another important step would soon be taken in marshalling the people of the world against the Nazi criminal. NAZI CLAIM ENTRY INTO WHITE RUSSIAN CENTRE. LONDON, July 15. Berlin radio claims that German shock troops, after. crossing the Dneiper, have entered the suburbs of Mogiev (capital of the White Russian Soviet Republic, with a population of about 47,000. Its site is on the riverbank).
