ANNOUNCEMENT BY MR CHURCHILL
Cheered Loudly in House of Commons POSSIBILITY OF RECONCILIATION WITH POLAND STUBBORN FIGHTING CONTINUES ON EASTERN FRONT LONDON, July 15. Russia is now an ally of Great Britain. Mr Churchill told the House of Commons that the Anglo-Russian agreement had the full assent of the British and Russian people and of the great Dominions overseas. “It is, of course,’’ he said, “an alliance. The Russian people are now our allies.’’ This statement was loudly cheered by the House. Mr Churchill also spoke of the possibility of a reconciliation between the Russian and Polish Governments. Mr Eden was bringing about a very great measure of agreement between the two governments, but it had not yet reached its conclusion. An important success not officially claimed is reported by the correspondent of a Russian paper, who states that in the central sector the Russians threw the enemy back 19 miles from the River Dneiper. . , A Russian communique reports stubborn fighting last night on the line of the German attack towards Leningrad in the north-west, and towards Smolensk in the central sector. Continued raids have been carried out by the Russian Air Force on German mechanised units and in Rumanian oil fields and refineries. A German, communique states that operations in the east are progressing steadily.
