FIRE FIGHTING

SERVICES IN MASTERTON MEN REQUIRED. APPEAL BY SUPERINTENDENT. Reference was again made today by Mr T. B. Clark, Superintendent of the Masterton Fire Brigade, to the establishment and training of the emergency fire fighting services in Masterton. Mr Clark said that he was in constant touch with the authorities in Wellington, and had been requested to continue with his efforts to form a unit consisting of 20 men for the Emergency Fire Service in Masterton. “Men required for the Emergency Fire Service,” said Mr Clark, “are those not eligible for overseas service, and should be from 41 to 45 years of age. Here I wish to say that men who have not passed for the military forces overseas through no fault of their own, may be accepted in the Emergency Fire Service Corps. The military medical standard for grade 1 will apply except that certain affections (flat feet, varicose veins, and varicocele) which debar from acceptance for overseas service in the military forces, will be disregarded. At present, the obligation is on the superintendent in each centre, to do everything possible to recruit the necessary personnel for his E.F.S. unit. Arrangements have been made for the medical examination of volunteers to be carried out by the medical boards engaged in examining military recruits. “I wish to appeal to the citizens of Masterton, to men, married or single, who are not eligible for overseas service, to volunteer for the Emergency Fire Service in Masterton,” said Mr Clark, who, as superintendent, will give all details on application to him. “Men who are willing to serve-in the E.F.S. and who are suitable in age and physical condition should be released from their obligations to the Home Guard, and I hope." said Mr Clark, "that there will be a good response to the appeal. “The Emergency Precaution Scheme, of which the E.P.S. fire section is a part thereof, is purely a voluntary corps for which a strength of 30 or more men are required,” said Mr Clark. "1 would welcome more men to join this unit, as this section is very urgent. I would advise intending volunteers to make application to the Town Clerk or myself. Here, 1 wish to point out, that young single men who are not eligible for overseas service are united to join the presidential auxiliary staff of the brigade. There are 6 vacancies and anyone wishing to join this part of the fire service is requested to make application to me.
