WAIRARAPA COLLEGE

ENJOYABLE SOCIAL EVENING PARENTS AND OTHERS ENTERTAINED. INSPECTION OF CLASS ROOMS. An enjoyable social evening was held at the Wairarapa College last night when the Parents’ Association entertained members of the Board of Gov-, ernors and their wives, the teaching staff and their wives, and parents. There were over 200 people present, which included visitors from all parts of the Wairarapa. All took the opportunity of inspecting the class rooms and viewed the work carried out by the pupils. Many favourable comments were passed on the high standard of work in evidence. The assembly hall, which was gaily bedecked with bowls of Iceland poppies, wattle and colourful foliage, was arranged in lounge fashion. The guests were welcomed by the secretary, Mr A. J. Towns, in the absence of the president of the Parents’ Association, Mr A. Owen Jones. Mr Towns stated that it was pleasing to see so many present, which showed that all took a keen interest in the school’s affairs. The function was held to give the parents, who had not already done so, an opportunity to inspect the buildings and meet the teachers and members of the board. Mr Towns stressed the need for cooperation by the parents, as essential work had still to be carried out. The work should be carried out now and not after the war. By giving the children every available facility in the furtherance of education, work would be done which was quite as essential as war work. Mr G. C. L. Dickel was in charge of the musical programme. Much appreciated items were rendered by Messrs

R. Gilbert, J. W. Bird, and A. J. Drew. Mr H. Filer presided at the piano. Supper was served by a committee of ladies. The chairman of the College Board, Mr W. R. Nicol thanked the Parents’ Association for arranging the function. He considered it an outstanding success. The association was doing splendid work and he appealed to parents to give their co-operation.
