OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
• THAT OATH (To the Editor.) Sir,—lt would appear from your report of a discussion that took place at the recent Trust Lands Trust meeting that Mr Macfarlane Laing cannot distinguish between the voluntary taking of an oath of allegiance and the arbitrary selection of one particular group of the community to have their loyalty tested by an order to take the pain of dismissal. Such a distipertion should not be too subtle for the regal mind. Like Mr Laing, I would be very willing to take the oath daily if such action were likely to assist the war effort or to promote patriotic fervour. So. also, I know would every member of the College staff and, I suppose, also, all members of the Trust. If, however, the member for Masterton were to induce Parliament to pass a bill compelling members of the Trust either to take the oath or to vacate their seats I venture to suggest that there would be a by-election. I am, etc G. W. MORICE. Masterton, July 12.
