VITAMINS ONLY
DAY OF THE DIETITIAN. The British Ministei’ of Food. Lord Woolton. has just explained that he is neither a cook nor a dietitian. But, notes lhe “Manchester Guardian,” the science which ho disclaims is certainly in favour. Nobody with a food to sell would now advertise it as delicious, or even as grateful and comforting. The public is not thus sensuously wooed and won. The fodder must be cried in the market-place as though every man were a medical student or apprenticed to the public analyst. So the salesman, instead of appealing to the emotion of greed, runs through the whole gamut of the vitamins, articles which seem to grow in number, as in favour, with the years. Calorics, once so well established in the dietitian's lexicon, seem to have lostground. The average consumer is-re-garded as a quenchless seeker after knowledge who is always beginning, “Tell me, doctor.” No doubt it is well for dyspeptics to have such a thirst for knowledge as well as for bicarbonate of soda, but when any form of science becomes thus strongly established it is always advisable to look through it as well as up to it. When the jargon of the dietitian is flying thick and last, it is generally prudent to consume the new learning, like an old story, with a few grains of common salt,
