WOMEN’S INSTITUTE PAHAUTEA-KAHUTARA MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Pahautea-Kahutara Women’s Institute Mrs Elbe presided over a good attendance of members. Apologies were received from Mesdames., McKenna, Pope, Cade and Sinclair. It was decided to send parcels to local soldiers overseas. A bring and buy stall is to be held at the next meeting. Mrs Corlet gave the thought for the day: “If you can’t do what you like, like what you do.” The competitions resulted as follows: Best bloom: Mrs Henderson 1, Mrs Fope 2. Marmalade: Mrs Duncan Wilson 1, Mrs Hood 2. The competitions next month will be for shortbread, which will be sent in soldiers’ parcels. The hostesses were Mesdames D. Wilson, Henderson and Playle. At the conclusion of the Ladies’ Guild meeting the members joined the Institute members. Mrs Bidwill introduced Mrs Thurston, who gave an interesting address on India. At the conclusion Miss Corlet, on behalf of those present, thanked Mrs Thurston.' Tea was served by members from both institutions. Personal Items. i Miss Jean Donald is visiting Wellington as the guest of Mrs Doctor. The death occurred suddenly yesterday of Mr John Houliston at the age of 74. For the last 20 years he had been manager of Mr Frank Wall's Riverside station. He leaves a widow.
The funeral of the late Mrs Hurley took place at the Featherston cemetery yesterday afternoon, the Rev. Father Connor conducting the service at St. Teresa’s Church and at the graveside. The pall bearers were Messrs Raymond, Vincent, Ronald and John Hurley (Hunterville), J, Burt and J. Brophy. The late Mrs Hurley was born in England, and since her arrival in New Zealand had served as sister in various hospitals. She leaves a husband. Mrs E. J. Hurley, Hunterville, and Mrs Joseph Hurley, Otaki, are visiting Featherston. Private A. T. Carlyon arrived in Wellington yesterday and is resting for a few days at the clearing station before returning to his home in Featherston. Mr C. C. Corlet, Pahautea, is visiting Palmerston. Women’s War Service. The W.W.S.A. transport corps in the Pahautea-Kahutara district is steadily growing, several new members having recently joined. The Sewing Circle of the PahauteaKahutara sub-centre of the Red Cross Society, which meets at the residence of Mrs A. Campbell Pearce, is doing splendid work. The ladies are to be congratulated on the helpful service they are giving. Among the articles made are several beautiful quilts. Clothing and articles have been dispatched to the Lady Galway Patriotic Committee headquarters in Wellington. Swimming Club Dance. The Featherston Swimming Club will hold another of their popular dances on Saturday night.
