NAZI EFFORTS

CONTINUED IN NORTHERN SECTORS IN SPITE OF MOUNTING LOSSES. BETWEEN ARCTIC & BLACK SEA. (Received This Day, 12.35 p.m.) LONDON, July 10. The- German offensive in the northerly sectors of Russia is unabated, despite the hourly piling up of losses of men and material both there and elsewhere between the Arctic and the Black Sea. . A German communique says operations in the East are proceeding without respite. German forces, supported by Finnish formations, after several days’ fighting, took the strongly fortified Salla, and smashed a Soviet division. The Finnish Radio claims that Genman and Finnish troops are making a joint thrust towards Sortavala and Wiipuri. The Germans in Estonia have, it is claimed, advanced further from Fellin. The Estonian Radio was heard declaring that ail preparations had been made for the defence of Turi. The Moscow Radio says recruits have poured into the Estonian National Militia to help combat the German hordes. The Germanophile “AftonbladeJ;” (Sweden) claims that street fighting has broken out in Tallinn. At the other end of the scales a similarly unconfirmed report says the Russians have recaptured Lemberg. A Hungarian communique says advanced troops, consisting of Hungarians and a German regiment, have continued the battle with enemy rearguards for the passage of the River Pruth. Hungarian infantry are continuing the. pacification of occupied territory. The reference to pacification probably covers the activities of Russian guerillas, who are stubbornly refusing to recognise the German conception of defeat and continue to raid, rob and harass the German lines of supply. There is fresh Axis talk of rain impeding Panzer forces attempting to roll across Bessarabia. The “Popolo di Roma” says the Bessarabian front is a quagmire, in which tanks and lorries are bogged.
