GERMAN EASTERN INVASION Russians Report Stabilisation of Front ENEMY ATTACKS IN NORTH REPELLED WITH GREAT LOSS DESTRUCTION OF NAZI MOTORISED DIVISION CLAIMED LONDON, July, 10.. A communique from the German High Command dismisses the main Eastern fighting in seven words: ‘ 1 Operations in the East continue without respite.” This reticence is probably explained by an official statement in Moscow that the Russian Army is now established in fairly stable positions over the whole of the 1,800 miles of the frontier. In the Northern sector, which extends from the Baltic coast of Estonia to the River Dvina, the general direction of the German offensive is north-east, towards Leningrad. The Germans have occupied about half of Estonia. The Russians claim that German attacks in this area have been repelled with great loss to the enemy. In the central sector the Germans are apparently attempting to drive eastwards towards Moscow, but each flank of the attacks is said to be held by the Russians, who claim the destruction of a German motorised division, 40 guns and a great quantity of transport. It is not clear how many points have been reached by the Germans on the Dneiper, but they are certainly not there on any broad front. South of the Pripet Marshes a great German pincer movement seems to be aimed at biting off a larg’e part of the Ukraine, but the Russians claim to be holding it in check. The enemy offensive in Bessarabia is being resisted. The Russian air force destroyed up to 100 enemy tanks and shot down 33 German machines in big dog-fights.
