DISTINGUISHED AIRMAN
AWARDS OF BAR TO D.S.O. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, July 8. A naval officer and an Air Force officer receive the unusual distinction of the award of a bar to the D.S.O. They are Lieutenant Commander J. Rowland. who is awarded the bar for courage and skill in a successful action against an enemy submarine, and Wing Commander A. Malan, the South African ace. Wing Commander Malan received the D.S.O. in December, 1940, and the bar is awarded as the result of the courage, judgment and determination displayed in leading his wings on numerous recent operations over Northern France. During these operations he increased his confirmed victories over the enemy from 19 to 28, and in addition damaged and probably destroyed 20 more. He is the first airman since the war started to be awarded a bar to the D. 5.0., and the second pilot ever to be awarded bars to the D.S.O. and the D.F.C. Mr Churchill recently saw Wing Commander Malan at a lighter station and learned that his year-old son would be christened soon. Mr Churchill promised to be godfather to the baby, one of whose names will be Winston.
