The Cairo correspondent of the “Daily Express" says General Sir Archibald Wavell’s new job is more important than was at first realised. During Raschid Ali’s rising, Iraq was taken from the India command and given to General Wavcll. Now, as Commander-in-Chief. India, he takes back Iraq. He has all the responsibility of planning to meet the Germans if they drive to Iraq and of developing Basra as a second British war base in the Middle East. General Wavell’s job is to throw a barrier against a further drive across Turkey. Syria, Iraq and Iran.
