A welcome to Palmerston North and district was accorded their Excellencies the Governor-General. Sir Cyril Newall, and Lady Newall, on their first official visit to Palmerston North yesterday. Despite heavy rain which began to fall just as the civic programme was about to begin, there was a large attendance of the public at the civic welcome, which was held in the Opera House instead of at the band rotunda in the Square. The city was beflagged and many business houses closed for an hour from noop.
The death occurred at Pahiatua yesterday of Mr Alexander Ross, at the age of 83 years. Mr R. L. Crocker, of Renall Street, Masterton, left today for the Air Force training camp at Harewood. The Hon W. Nash, Acting-Prime Minister, left last night for Auckland, where he will meet the newly-ap-pointed High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in Australia, Sir Ronald Cross. It is announced that Private Jack B. Gadsby, formerly of the staff of the “Wairarapa Daily Times.” who was previously reported missing, is now a prisoner of Avar in Greece.
Mr Joseph Charles Willis died in Dunedin yesterday at the age of 71. He finished his career in the police force in Dunedin as Superintendent Willis, and retired in 1931. He had previously served as sergeant in South Dunedin, after which he was stationed in various districts in the Dominion. The funeral of the late Mr Malcolm Campbell* took place yesterday, the Rev David McNeur conducting a service at the chapel of Hyde’s Funeral Service Ltd., and also that at the graveside at the Karori Cemetery. Many beautiful wreaths were sent by sympathisers. The pall-bearers .were Messrs R. F. R. Beetham, Jock McKenzie, C. McLean, J. Kennedy. D. McDonald and Angus McLeod. After accompanying the Minister of Lands. Mr Langstone, and Mr Coates for part of the visit they are making to the United States for the purchase of war materials, Mr L. J. Schmitt, secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce, arrived at Auckland from San Francisco by the American Clipper. Mr Schmitt' said he was unable to discuss the results of the mission, a report on which would be made to the Government.
