OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

THE AMATEUR DRAMA

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Would you be good enough to, grant me space to congratulate the Little Theatre Society on their efforts? 1 am a resident of Wellington, but I have seen the last two productions, j and consider the excellence of the settings, the manner of the presentations, and the standard of the acting, to be deserving of high commendation. I was therefore very surprised and amazed to see in your columns after the opening performances of each of these plays that the efforts of the Society were damned by faint praise. 1 understand that tiie Society donates its profits to patriotic purposes,' but even apart'from this, surely its efforts are more worthy of every encouragement. It must be discouraging for those connected with the performances to receive such casual reference as appeared in your issue of July 8. Even if you are'not prepared to offer constructive criticism, do Sir, on future occasions, endeavour to encourage your local society, in fostering dramatic art and endeavour to convince your readers that the Little Theatre Society’s productions arc well worth their patronage as indeed they are. My congratulations and best wishes to the society. For obvious reasons I do not wish my name published, but sign myself, “WELL WISHER,” Island Bay. Cur correspondent’s strictures are quite unwarranted and his sweeping assertions hardly deserve attention. It may be pointed out, however, that a reasonably extended notice of the latest production of the Little Theatre Society appeared in our issue of July 7 and that the paragraph he mentions, in accordance with custom in this country and elsewhere, merely dealt briefly with the concluding performance. —Ed.
