DECISIVE ACT
JAPANESE ON ICELAND OCCUPATION
ENTRY OF UNITED STATES.
INTO ZONE OF HOSTILITIES
(By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.49 a.m.) TOKIO, July 8. The Domei Agency says the United States’ occupation of Iceland io a decisive action and must have been taken with strong determination. It means that the United States has finally entered the zone of hostilities as defined by Germany and holds increased possibilities of a further aggravation of relations between the United States and Germany. SENATOR CRITICISED DISCLOSURE OF MILITARY INFORMATION. STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT’S SECRETARY. (Received This Day, 11.0 a.m.) WASHINGTON, July 8. • The President’s Secretary (Mr S. Early) criticised Senator Wheeler today for giving away an obvious military secret in disclosing last week the imminence of the Iceland move, at a time when United States forces were en route to the island. The Germans might have taken advantage of any confusion naturally arising when large numbers of troops land, Mr Early observed, which might have involved slaughter. Asked if an air line to Iceland would be established, Mr Early declined to discuss the matter, but pointed out that President Roosevelt’s Message to Congress emphasised the importance of keeping open communications. He said: “The Message speaks for itself.”
