COUNTY AFFAIRS

MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL BUSINESS BEFORE FINANCE COMMITTEE. HOMEWOOD ROAD BRIDGE. A meeting of the finance committee of the Masterton County Council was held today. The chairman, Mr IT. H. Mawley, presided. The treasurer reported on the bank accounts as follows: County fund account, debit £6,339 Is 4d; bridges fund account, credit, £598 17s ICd; bridge loan, 1938, credit, £4,136 16s sd, of which £4,000 was on fixed deposit; bridges loan, 1940, credit, £21.857 15s 4d, £12,000 of which was on fixed deposit.

COUNCIL

Receipts since last meeting totalled £2,692 2s. Main Highways and Public Works claims outstanding amounted to £2,851 15s lOd. Accounts for £5,416 7s 10s were recommended for payment. The county clerk (Mr J. C. D. Mackley) reported that timber from the old Taueru river bridge, on the MastertonStronvar main highway, would be sold by public auction on July 15. The district engineer, Public Works Department, advised that Cabinet had approved of a subsidy of £2,750, being a £1 for £1 basis, towards the cost of rebuilding the Motuwaireka bridge cn the Homewood road, the subsidy to be a claim against the current year's allocation on the Public Works Department road vote. Messrs McCalmont Bros.’ tender for the bridge only was accepted. The council decided to undertake the work of building the approaches with its own plant and staff.

The county clerk's action in securing the synchronisation of the payment of interest and principle concerning advances made to certain farmers under the Rural Housing Act, 1939, was approved. It was proposed to change the due date for instalments from April 1 and October 1, to June 1 and December 1 in each year. Former applicants had agreed to that course.
