CARTERTON

ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS LOYAL HEART OF OAK LODGE. (“Times-Age” Special.) Bro. H. J. Rathbone, N.G., presided over the fortnightly meeting of members of the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge held last evening. Sick pay totalling £8 was ordered to be paid, and other accounts amounting to £25 11s were passed for payment. A war member’s certificate was received in regard to a brother on service in England. This frees the member from contributions during his service overseas. The District Secretary wrote enclosing an extract of a letter received from the New Zealand Branch of the British Medical Association, and asking the lodge to exercise patience in this important matter. SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING LAST EVENING. Mr H. J. McKenzie presided over the monthly meeting of the Carterton District High School Committee held ■last evening. There were also present Messrs Jas Finn, B. E. Clark, P. Beere, C. K. Goodin, R. Williams, W. Knowles and the headmaster, W. Martin. The treasurer reported that the general school account was in credit £64 6s 7d and the special account £ll ss. Accounts amounting to £45 5s 6d were passed for payment. The Education Board forwarded incidental expenses grants for June and July, totalling £45 6s 2d. A letter’ from the Education Board stated that the repainting of the picket fence at the school would be listed along with other painting work and would come up for consideration later in the year. Miss I. Maxwell notified that she had accepted a position at Manakau School and asked to be relieved of her duties at Carterton at the end of July. The resignation was received with regret. Miss Maxwell is to be written to thanking her for the services rendered to the school. The Education Board wrote stating that Mr Keedwell had informed the board that he is unable to accept the war appointment at Carterton. The board advised, that the next applicant, Mr Mowatt, had been approached and that he also was not available. The committee would be advised when a had been made. The Education Board wrote in regard to the appointment of labour under Scheme 13 and advising that at the present time the maximum subsidy for school grounds improvements • was at the rate of £4 per man per week. The headmaster was given authority to purchase the necessary trees for planting on Arbor Day. It was resolved that the Education Board be written to requesting that the walls of the school be painted, and that attention be drawn to necessary repairs to the old wooden school at South Carterton. The matter of top-dressing school playing areas was left to the chairman and Mr Williams to arrange. The secretary was instructed to write to the Education Board pointing out the increasing scarcity of firewood, and to ask that the district high school rooms be centrally heated. The headmaster’s report showed that the primary roll was 380 and the secondary roll 47. He stated that the old wooden school at South Carterton had been broken into during the last two weekends and papers strewn about the science room. It was decided that the locks on the window be attended to. Mr J. Brown, a teacher on the school staff, will enter the hospital on Wednesday for treatment and leave of absence was granted him. The next meeting will be held on August 11. Dental Clinic. A meeting of the executive committee of the Dental Clinic was held last evening. Mi’ Jas Fisher presided and . there were also present Messrs P. Beere, W. Knowles, H. J. McKenzie and Nurse Berne. An apology for absence was received from Rev Father Devlin. Considerable discussion ensued concerning the arrears of dental fees, and it was resolved that all delegates be summoned to a special general meeting to be held on Monday, July 28, at 7.30. p.m. nurse was authorised to purcha&ja rubber mat and a stool for use at the clinic room.
