BRILLIANT SCENE
R.SA. BALL GATHERING IN CARTERTON LAST NIGHT. FIVE DEBUTANTES PRESENTED TO MAYORESS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Myriads of coloured light cast a soft glow over a brilliant scene at the King’s Theatre, Carterton, last night when one of the leading social events in the district, the R.S.A. ball, took place. There was a large attendance of residents from all parts of the Wairarapa . The frocks were an outstanding feature of the ball. Many original creations were in evidence. All present considered the gathering one of the most successful yet held. An innovation was the presentation of five debutantes to the Mayoress, Mrs D. L. Taverner. The music was supplied by Mr Tom Udy’s Orchestra and extras were played by Misses V. Urwin, M. Herrick and T. Udy. The duties of M.C. were capably carried out by Messrs H. Bain and H. Rathbone. Extras were also played by Mrs V. Robinson and Miss V. Sorensen. Promptly at nine o’clock the debutantes, accompanied by their escorts walked gracefully up the hall io the stage to the strains of a Strauss waltz where they were presented to the Mayoress, Mrs D. L. Taverner, who was gowned in midnight blue chiffon with a white coatee. As each young lady was presented her name was announced by Mr Taverner. When all the debutantes had been presented they filed down from the stage and were joined by^their escorts in a waltz. Following a short period/ Mi’ and Mrs Taverner took the floor and the onlookers were invited to join in.
The ceremony was brief but most impressive. The following young ladies made their debut: —Miss Cherry Robinson (wearing a charming gown of white taffeta with silver motifs and posy to tone), Miss Erica Chennells (gowned in silk lace embroidered with flowers, and white posy), Miss I. Abbott (white lace and pink and white posy), Miss H. McKinnon (embroidered georgette), and Miss B. Herrick (white embossed crepe trimmed with silver).
The supper tables were beautifully decorated with bowls of Iceland poppies, copper beech and wattle. An energetic committee of ladies assisted in dispensing the savoury supper which was conducted on buffet lines. The success of the gathering was due in no small measure to the excellent work of the secretaries, Messrs Rabbitts and Chennells, and their committee.
A patriotic raffle was drawn on the stage during the evening. Miss C. Robinson, a debutante, was invited to make the draw. The winning number was 1068, the ticket being held by Mr A. Bond, Carterton.
