ANOTHER GAIN
MABE BY THE ALLIES IN SYRIA CAPTURE OF DEIR EZ ZOR. VICHY TROOPS ASSEMBLED AT SALONIKA. LONDON, July 4. A Cairo communique reports the occupation of Deir-ez-Zor, on the Euphrates, by Indian troops. Five guns, two aircraft and many vehicles were captured in the town. The occupation of this town means that practically the whole of the southern portion of Syria is now in Allied hands. In the capture of Palmyra about 300 Vichy troops gave themselves up. The R.A.F. continues to attack enemy targets in Syria. Two twin-en-gined bombers were set on fire and others were severely damaged. An unofficial report says there is a concentration of Vichy troops at Salonika and that an attempt is to be made to get them to Syria by sea, a distance of 700 miles. SHIPS SET ON FIRE. Further raids have been made by the R.A.F. on enemy harbours and aerodromes in Libya. Outside Tripoli harbour two 5,000-ton ships were set on fire. At least one Italian plane was destroyed and several others were severely damaged. From all operations in the Middle East two of. our planes are missing.
