WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
SOLWAY-MAN Al A. MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the SolwayManaia Women’s Institute was held in the Epiphany Hall on Thursday. Mrs Diamond presided over a large attendance of members. All members stood for one minute's silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Mrs Aplin, who was a foundation member of the Institute. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Carman, Sutherland, Junr., McAlister, Cotton and Lepper. A demonstration in making a crochet mat from strips of washing material 1 was given by Mrs Cotton and on recovering an eiderdown by Mrs Foster. Both were much appreciated and the ladies were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The roll call, “A sentence made from Solway-Manaia Institute," was well responded to and some clever sentences resulted. The competitions resulted as follows: Cooking, shortbread, Mrs Diamond 1, Mrs Webber 2; spray from autumn foliage, Mrs Munn 1; shoulder spray from leaves and berries, Mrs R. Allan 1, Mrs Webber 2, Mrs Reynolds 3; best flower, Mrs Webber 1, Mrs Munn 2, Mrs Carr 3; sewing child’s frock, Mrs Crew 1, Mrs Sutherland 2. Impromptu speeches by four ladies caused much amusement. UPPER PLAIN MEETING. INTERESTING DEMONSTRATION. At the monthly meeting of the Upper Plain Women’s Institute apologies for absence wore received from Mesdames Skeet and Mannell. Mrs G. Dagg gave a very interesting demonstration on felt novelties, and displayed many articles made from old felt hats. Two soldiers’’parcels were sent away in May. Afternoon tea was served.
