FOUR DEFEATS
SUFFERED BY FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IN HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. TWO ON POLICY ISSUES. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.15 p.m.) ' CANBERRA. This Day. The Government was defeated four times in the House of Representatives last night. Two of the defeats were on policy issues relating to the war effort—finance and subversive statements. Private members motions led to the defeats. Three divisions were won by Labour by one vote. On each occasion, Mr Wilson, the Victorian Independent who holds the balance of power, voted with the Lab cur Party. A motion relating to war finance was carried on the voices. This motion demanded the disallowance of a national security regulation authorising the Commonwealth Bank to guarantee advances by private banks to producers of essential articles.
