DEFENCE OF INDIA
ENEMY MUST BE KEPT AT DISTANCE. SIR C. AUCHINLECK’S FAREWELL MESSAGE. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) SIMLA, July 3. “The further from India we send our troops, ships and aircraft the more secure we shall be,” said General Auchinleck in a farewell message as Commander-in-Chief in India. “Concentrating India’s fighting forces in India is the surest way to court defeat and disaster. The enemy must be kept at a distance and attacked wherever he is. The best defence is attack, and attack we must and will.”
He added that he viewed the future with increasing confidence. “I see signs that the tide is slowly turning,” he said.
