MEAT EXPORTS

IMPROVEMENT IN SHIPPING POSITION FUTURE OF THE INDUSTRY. TO BE CONSIDERED BY CONFERENCE. At its recent meeting, the New’ Zealand Meat Producers Board gave consideration to details of the meat export position with the latest figures relating to the export killings, shipping prospects and the cool, storage position. Export killings for the balance of the present season, together with an estimate regarding the 1941/42 season were considered, in detail. The shipping position for the last two months showed a considerable improvement, but it is of course quite impossible to estimate what the future will hold.

A report was received regarding a deputation comprising representatives of the Meat Board and the Dairy Board, which waited upon the Minister of Agriculture and Marketing (the Hon. J. G. Barclay) in connection with storage.

After going fully into the whole situation, the board decided to call a special conference of the delegates constituting the electoral committee, to consider in detail the present and future position of the industry. At a board meeting a report was also received from the General Manager (Mr John,Fraser) in regard to the hide committee on which the board is represented.

The latest returns relating to the grading of the various classes of fat! stock at each export works were also submitted to the meeting. In connection with the annual audit of the accounts of freezing companies and meat exporters the general manager was authorised to advise the Government that the board is of opinion that an audit should take place again this year, and that steps should be taken to this end forthwith to ensure the results being available as soon as possible. Application for alterations to certain expert freezing works were considered and approval recommended to the Department of Agriculture in accordance with statutory requirements. A progress report was received from the Trade Commissioner for New Zealand in Canada regarding trial shipments of lamb sent forward by the board for marketing in Montreal and Toronto. As soon as the consignments are cleared up the board will publish the results.

Advices were received from the Auckland Provincial branch of toe Farmers’ Union regarding experiments which had been conducted by them in connection with dehydrated meat. This experiment is being watched with interest and a sample block of meat was inspected by members. Other matters discussed by the board included the cost of telescoping miltton and lamb, and arrangements relating to the annual district lamb competition.
