WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT MAURICEVILLE. COMPETITION AND OTHER ACTIVITIES. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville District Women’s Institute was held at the home of Mrs McArley on Tuesday. Miss R. Mortensen presided over a good attendance of members. Mrs C. Nielsen, Taumarunui, and Mrs Tweedie, Ormondville, were welcomed as visitors and Mrs G. McWhirter was welcomed as a member. The roll call, “Suggestions for Soldiers’ Parcels,” brought forth many helpful hints. A number of soldiers’ parcels had been dispatched. The committee at all times would gratefully receive biscuits in tins, knitted articles, empty tins and Hour bags. It was unanimously decided that each member be responsible for the knitting of a soldier’s pullover. Mrs Wilson gave an interesting and helpful report on the refresher course for Women’s Institute officers recently held in Carter ton. Brisk business was done at the Bring and Buy stall. Letters of thanks and appreciation were received from relatives of soldiers overseas who had received parcels from the institute. Owing to the busy time approaching, members felt that they were unable to arrange for a demonstration by Miss Cocks-John-son in August.

A donation towards the soldiers’ parcel fund was received from Mrs Roigard, an ex-membei; who was now living outside the district. Donations were also received from Mrs Spackman, Mrs H. Myers and Mrs C. Nielsen. To all these generous donors a hearty vote of thanks was passed. The best bloom competition was won by Mrs King, with Mrs H. Myers,' Junr., second and Miss J. Larsen and Mrs G. Nielsen, equal, third. The competition for the best article made from a sugar bag was won by Miss J. Larsen.

Mesdames Cameron, Pain, Clarke and Broadbent ably entertained during the social period. Amusing competitions were won by Miss J. Larsen and Mrs Rhodes. Votes of thanks were passed to these ladies and to the hostesses, Mrs McArley and Mrs C. Clarke.

The August meeting will be held at Mrs Nikolaisen’s home at Mauriceville West. The roll call will be: Name of a New Zealand native tree, and the competitions, best article made from half a yard of cretonne and a best bloom competition. A Bring and Buy stall will be held and a demonstration is to be arranged. The hostesses will be Mesdames Nikolaisen and G. Nielsen. Mrs Trass and Mrs King are to be in charge of the social half-hour.
