LAWNS IN WINTER

HOW TO TREAT THEM. During the winter months the lawn benefits by being swept to disperse any worm casts, twigs and other rubbish, and on light land by being rolled frequently. At this time of the year the emerald green of the lawn is the most beautiful feature of the garden and deserves to be well kept. It is a mistake to roll a lawn on heavy soil too frequently in the winter; the best plan is to use a spike roller. For lawns on clay soil, sand is an excellent winter topdressing. Coarse weeds show clearly now when the grass is “thin” and every opportunity should bo taken to uproot them. Moss ought to be raked out. Cutting the verges with an edging iron or sharp spade for the purpose of getting a straight edge adds greatly to the appearance, of the garden.
