CARTERTON
HOME GUARD
PARADE LAST NIGHT. (‘.‘Times-Age” Special.) A parade of the Home Guard was held last evening at the King’s Theatre. A new Guardsman, Mr C. C. Callender, marched into the company. Company drill, rifle exercises, physical training, etc., were indulged in. It was announced that the regulations provide for benefits from the Social Security Department, for Guardsmen who receive injury while on duty with the Guard. Any such injury should be reported immediately to the Company Commander through the usual channels.
RED CROSS SOCIETY SUB-COMMITTEES FORMED. A meeting of the general committee of the Carterton branch of the Red Cross 'Society was held in the Borough Offices on Monday. There were present Mesdames Cole, Beaven, Every, Sorensen, Udy, Fairbrother, Marshall, Loftus, Stubbs, Messrs Ingley, Tucker, and Smart. An apology for absence was received from Mrs Taverner.
The treasurer reported that the money received since last meeting was: Clareville school £l, cards 4s 6d. Accounts amounting to 7s 2d were passed for payment. Sub-committees were elected as follows: First Aid and Home Nursing, Mesdames Marshall, Loftus and Taverner, Misses Smart, Ingley and Tucker; Clothing and Comforts, Mesdames Beaven, Cole, Every, Sorensen, Udy; Social, Mesdames Fairbrother, Stubbs, Misses Ingley and Tucker. The secretary, Miss Berrill, was elected delegate to the E.P.S. Hospital Unit committee. .
It was decided to print tickets for the raffle of a canteen of cutlery presented by Mrs Sayer of Kent Street, and to. have them on sale from July 9 to September 6. The Home Nursing and First Aid Committee are to report in connection with securing a suitable 1 room and the prices of equipment for a V.A.D. lecture room, besides a room for two beds with the cost of bedding and suitable utensils needed. Mrs Fairbrother (Commandant) reported on the activities of the Transport Section. Remits to the annual general meeting of the Dominion Council were discussed.
WOMEN’S LABOUR PARTY
EUCHRE TOURNAMENT. There was a fair attendance at the euchre tournament held in the Band Room last week under the auspices of the Carterton Women’s Labour League. The prizes were won by Mesdames Blatchford and C. Holland. Afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mesdames Hall, Thompson, Barrett and Green. These tournaments are held every fortnight. Parcel Evening. •On Wednesday, July 16, a parcel evening will be held in the Dalefield Hall in honour of the approaching marriage of Miss P. Bambry. Mrs V. J. Ashton’s orchestra will supply the music. Valueless Cheques. Alleged valueless cheques are said to have been cashed recently in Carterton and other parts of the district. Heavy Frost. A heavy frost was experienced in Carterton this morning, the countryside being covered with a white mantle. Personal Items. Messrs W. Gay and W. Nimot left Carterton on Monday to spend a holiday at Wanganui.' Miss Tyler, daughter of Mrs F. Tyler. Lincoln Road, Carterton, a member of the Alexander Salvation Army Home staff, has passed her examination as a military nurse. Mrs Skinner, Auckland, is spending a holiday with her mother, Mrs Grimmer, of Garrison Street, Carterton. R.S.A. Ball. The annual ball of the Carterton branch of the R.S.A. is to be held in the King's Theatre, Carterton. on Monday evening. A feature of the ball will be the presentation of the debutantes to the Mayoress at 9 o'clock. The ladies' committee has in hand the supper arrangements-which will be a feature of the ball. The interior of the hall will be decorated with flags of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Prices for admission are fixed at men 4s. ladies 2s 6d. The joint secretaries are I Messrs A. G. Rabbitts and C. A. ChenL hells. Rugby Football. The Wairarapa selector, Mr Keith Reid, will tonight select the Wairarapa team to play Hawke's Bay at Masterton on Saturday next.
