Advice has been received by the New Zealand Government that his Majesty the King has approved the appointment of General Sir Archibald Wavell as Commander-in-Chief in India and a member of the Governor-General’s Executive Council, in succession to General Sir Claude Auchinlech, and the appointment of the latter as General Officer Commanding in the Middle East, on the vacation of his post by General Wavell. It is understood that these are war time appointments, the duration of which will depend on the military situation. His Majesty has also approved the appointment of Captain Oliver Lyttelton as a Minister of State. He will be a member of the War Cabinet in the Middle East, where he will concert on its behalf measures necessary for the prosecution of the war in that theatre, relating- to the conduct of military operations.
