Some local gains are reported in the Damascus and coastal sectors in Syria. Vichy troops on the coast have fallen back to new positions south of Beirut. Allied forces are now eight miles from the town of Palmyra, which is now surrounded by the Allied troops and is under constant British air attack.

The R.A.F. has raided the aerodrome at Aleppo and objectives elsewhere. Yesterday a raid was made on the harbour and shipping at Beirut, where a number of fires were started.
