CHEESE INDUSTRY

AU. WORKERS TO REGISTER

WITH DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL SERVICE.

NEED OF INCREASED OUTPUT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Minister of National. Service (Mr Semple) announces that in terms of the Cheese Industry (Registration of Employment) Order, 1941, the following persons will be required to register with the Director of National Service, Wellington:—

(a) All men engaged in the cheese manufacturing industry at the date of the order, June 30, 1941.

(b) All men, not so engaged at the above date, but who, during the five years preceding that date, have been engaged in the industry continuously for at least three months. (c) Owners of cheese factories. The word “owner’’ includes joint or several owners and also an owners’ agent or manager. In the case of a company, the manager, secretary or other principal officer must register. This obligation of registration will also apply to any manufacturing dairy which commences the manufacture of cheese after the date quoted above. Men. in the above classes who are members of the Territorial Force must register, but those who are members of any other of the aijmed forces are exempted. Registration forms are procurable from any cheese factory, placement offices and offices of the National Service and Social Security Department, and must be forwarded to the Director of National Service, Wellington. within 14 days from June 30. 1941. Mr Semple explained that the needs of Britain called for an increased cheese production of approximately fifty per cent over that of last season, and it was necessary to obtain an inventory of the labour available. The intention is that placement officers should get in touch with those men who have had experience in cheese factory work, and who for the time being are engaged in some other less essential occupation, and will endeavour to arrange for them again to take up employment in the cheese industry. I Mr Semple appealed to all such work- | ers to register promptly, and as far as practicable to return to cheese factories. where their services are so urgently required. In addition, we will welcome offers of service in cheese production from physically fit men not cowered by the order and not engaged in essential industry, in order that, as the need develops, their services may be utilised in this work, which definitely will be part of the war effort. Each i such man should submit his offer to] the nearest placement officer and fur- 1 nish his name, address, usual occupation, and particulars of any trade or alternative occupation in which he has had experience. As it may not be possible to take advantage of these voluntary offers for some little time, such men should remain in their present employment until they are called upon for cheese production- —the absence of a call will not mean that their offer has been overlooked.
