CARTERTON
GIFT TO TEACHER BY SECONDARY PUPILS. ("Times-Age” Special.) The pupils in the secondary classes of the Carterton District High School gathered at the South End School yesterday afternoon to bid farewell to one of their teachers, Mr E. H. Fisher, who is leaving to take up new duties under the Auckland Education Board. On behalf of the pupils, Miss Dulcie Routhan said that the pupils were sorry to loose Mr Fisher as their teacher and they wished him the best of success in his new position. She asked Mr Fisher to accept a tobacco pouch from the pupils. Mr Fisher suitably acknowledged the gift.
BRIDE-TO-BE ENTERTAINED AT BELVEDERE. There was a large attendance at the Belvedere Schoolroom last evening, when the residents of Belvedere and Carrington tendered a “parcel evening” to Miss Ena Carter on the eve of her marriage. The time was spent in dancing to music supplied by Mrs Rogers of Dalefield. Extras were played by Miss I. Thomas and Mr Roy Knowles. Mr A. E. .Reid was an efficient M.C. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs G. Couper. The hostesses were Mesdames G. Couper. W. A. Taylor. C. Zabell, Buick and Misses B. Zabell and J. Benge. At a suitable interval in the proceedings Mr A. E. Reid asked Miss Carter to open the many gift parcels, which she did amid applause. Mr J. Hood, on behalf of his fiancee, suitably returned thanks.
P'atriotic Committee. Mr D. L. Taverner (Mayor) presided over a meeting of the Carterton District Patriotic Committee held in the P. and A. Buildings on Thursday evening. There were also present Messrs Geo Brown, J. Steel, A. T. Murray, A. C. Chennells, ,W. Martin and J. A. B. Lawrence. Mesdames J. f_>. Loftus, E. T. Beaven, H. E. Ordish, -4’. Beere and Miss C. Berrill and the secretary. Mr P. A. Cole. Apologies for absence were received from Miss O. W. Wolters, Messrs F. Court, B. Roberts, M.P., L. H. Smart, and J. Fisher. Mrs C. Bidwill wrote in regard to waste material for the Air Force and asking that the Girl Guides be requested to make a collection of the same. The letter Was received. The hon secretary, Ahiaruhe-Pona-tahi Sports Club, forwarded a cheque for £7 5s 7d, being £1 5s 7d proceeds of the Paddy's Market, and £6. further receipts from the sports meeting. Tlie Sports Club were thanked for their donation. The Mayor of Te Aroha forwarded a request for support to a resolution in regard to the proposed appeal for funds to be controlled locally to meet extreme- and urgent cases of hardship amongst returned soldiers. The letter was received. Mrs R. J. Grimmer tendered her resignation from the committee as a representative of the Carterton Women’s Institute.- The resignation was received with regret and the institute is to be asked to appoint another representative. It was resolved to postpone the art union until Monday, July 7. and that the drawing take place at midnight during the annual ball of the R.S.A. The chairman reported that the sum of £2071 13s 4d had been obtained to date, and that a further amount collected by the Anzac Day broadcast appeal in Carterton would be added to the amount.
Personal Items. Mr A. E. Hack, who has been at Rotorua undergoing medical treatment has returned to Carterton. Mr Edwin (“Teddy”) Taylor died at the Croydon Private Hospital, Carterton, on Thursday night after a short illness. Mr Taylor was well known throughout the Gladstone and Ponatahi districts, where he worked lotmany years. He was of a quiet, unassuming disposition and was respected by a wide circle of friends. Prior to his death he was employed by Mr Ryan. Ponatahi. The funeral took place at Clareville today. Church Service. Anglican Church service will be conducted at Longbush on Sunday at 2.30 p.m. Plunket Society Aids. Working under the Emergency Prdeaulion Scheme the Carterton branch of the Plunket Society have appointed twenty-one Plunket Aid.'-. R.S.A. Ball. The Carterton branch of the R.S.A. will hold its annual ball in the King's Theatre. Carterton. on Monday. July 7. Arrangements are under way to make the function an even greater success than its predecessors. The 'prices of admission are: Men. 4s; ladies, 2s Cd. A number of debutantes will be presented to the Mayoress. Mrs D. L. Taverner, at 9 o’clock.
