OUR LOSSES IN CRETE
/MUCH REDUCED BY HEROIC NAVAL EFFORT ■DESPERATE HAZARD TAKEN BY SHIPS. ANOTHER 2.000 MEN BROUGHT AWAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright! (Received This Day, 12.55 p.m.) LONDON. June 27. It can now be revealed that, as the result of action taken by Ad- v rniral Cunningham, after an eleventh-hour conference, New Zealand losses in Crete, which locked like totalling two-thirds, were reduced to one-third. The position looked extremely black and it seemed impossible to do more, but Admiral Cunningham decided to make a desperate last attempt to take off more troops. The cruiser Phoebe was hastily refuelled and reammunitioned and, with escorting destroyers, set out on a hazardous and heroic mission. The warships got through and brought off 2000 New Zealanders, in addition to Australians and some Britons.
